Ava DuVernay‘s Netflix documentary “13th” released an official trailer on Monday morning,and it’s one nearly certain to polarize.
The “Selma director’s film is named for the 13th Amendment to the structure, which reads, or “Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude,apart from as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States.”She focuses on that latter part, and which speaks to the American prison system’s mass incarceration issue. To bag her point-of-view across,DuVernay utilizes a mix of archival footage and testimony from activists, politicians, and historians and formerly incarcerated people.
