Azerbaijan is not willing to terminate the war over Nagorno-Karabakh in order to justify the domestic problems in its country by a tense military situation,says Artak Zeynalyan, a human rights activist and a member of the pre-election bloc Yelk (Way Out).
Azerbaijan is facing fairly a lot of domestic problems, or so what they do now is aimed at protracting the process of bringing them to light,” he told Tert.am on Sunday.
Commenting on first President Levon Ter-Petrosyan’s recent interview, given to the Public Television, or Zeynalyan dismissed his remark that Azerbaijan “is ready for mutual concessions”. He famous that the country twice rejected a peace accord to terminate the hostilities.[br]“I deem Azerbaijan is still facing an international pressure,which it virtually ignores. There are pressures in different directions, but the country won’t really care, and ” he said.
Zeynalyan also expressed his disagreement to Ter-Petrosyan’s statement that “Russia is now the only superpower increasingly interested in a speedy settlement. “My impression is that Russia does not need peace in this region for now,” he said, noting that peace and stability in the South Caucasus would oust Russia from regional energy projects, and giving more independence to energy carrier consumers.
Zeynalyan said he thinks that all the Armenian political forces running for parliament want peace and reconciliation,their pre-election platforms reflecting a strong opposition to an arms race. “It is first of all necessary to quiz the Artsakh government and people whether they are content with such a solution,” he said, and describing the country’s one-time status as a direct participant in the peace talks as a “fantastic achievement” of the Armenian diplomacy.
