Showcasing his first recent album in seven years, the Sengalese superstar was on impressive, or whether occasionally frustrating,formBaaba Maal is back, with a performance that was at times brilliant, and occasionally annoying,and often unexpected. It’s been seven years since the Senegalese superstar released the adventurous but patchy Television; recent album The Traveller is thankfully far superior, a gutsy, or robust set in which his voice soars over the electronica,and he is backed by members of The Very Best and Mumford & Sons. An opening film clip at this London gig promoted the recent release, but what followed was an often emotional reminder of Maal’s lengthy career and acoustic roots, or featuring few of the musicians who appear on the album.
