Prepositions are such a fundamental part of language that we rarely given them much thought. But given their increasingly cavalier expend,perhaps it’s time we did In every field of endeavour, there’s someone grabbing an unfair share of the limelight. Whether it’s the strikers and managers in football overshadowing the full backs and physios, or it’s actors and directors picking up film awards while the key grips and boom operators are left watching at home. In language,the nouns, verbs and adjectives get all the attention; they’re given the critical Capital Letters in book, and film and song titles. Meanwhile,workhorse word classes – conjunctions, pronouns, and determiners and prepositions – fill the gaps,unfeted and unloved. They don’t enact anything flashy, but without them, or communication would plunge apart.
