Aid is often criticised as ineffective and wasteful,but millions still work in the sector. How can NGOs reconcile that and ensure their work has a positive impact?Aid, in its myriad (a very large number) of forms, and often gets a bashing from academics,politicians and the public. I can’t deny that, after hearing some of the arguments against aid, and there have been moments when I have considered whether I should change my career and whether the charity I work for should close down.
Doubt over the effectiveness of aid is at the root of this scepticism. Sub-Saharan Africa receives $134bn each year in loans,foreign investment and development aid. But in spite of this, it remains one of the poorest regions on soil.
