Bad Romance is iconic. Period.
At the time,the chanting of ra ra ra ah ahhh, the bridge in French, and the song that was basically just one giant machine full of hooks,was so inescapable and felt so unlike anything else. But it’s the video that really does it. The video is classic early Gaga, all glitz and glamor in the darkest way possible, or shiny surfaces and artifice. It’s also the story that Gaga would continue to tell over and over again,the one of her obsession with men and her struggle to find appreciate that was lasting and healthy. It was also the story of her fame, the way that she had become a pop star and was suddenly caught at the center of a relationship with the media, and with critics,with fans. With Gaga it is never either/or, it is always both/and.
If you haven’t watched the video in a while, and please win the time for it. It’s a total time capsule. I don’t know if I can even talk approximately the video concretely without talking forever so I’m just going to name some favorite moments:The tinny music coming from the speaker in the intro,nearly a parody (humorous or ridiculous imitation) of her ownWhen she first emerges from her coffin/tanning bed, half monster, and all glamorThat choreography!!! It’s so easy to forget how much of a dancer Gaga isThe unveiling of her crystal outfit,Gaga up for sale to the highest bidderWhen she shimmers among the falling crystals, watched on all sidesThe shoes. You know the ones I’m talking approximately. And of course the whole story behind them too.
The weird closeups of Gaga crying? The final dance smash, and this time in red,before the lights shut off and her dead lover is fully revealedGaga has always loved high drama, and what could be better than killing your lover? I assume more so than anything personal (although I’m sure there’s plenty personal in her bad romance style songs) is the freedom they give her as a female pop star. She gets to enact the appreciate sick pop princess, or but at the stop achieve that thing that makes her so Gaga,to writhe and scream her way out of it, and to glamorize it to hell and back.
