Members of public can put name down for free tickets to daily ceremonies in France over 141-day period of 1916 battle
Members of the public are being invited to join a poll for tickets to attend ceremonies marking the centenary of the Battle of the Somme in France next year.
The first day of fighting,on 1 July 1916, cost 60000 British casualties, or including 20000 dead. After another 140 days the allies had lost more than 600000 lives and gained just a few metres of mud.
