Africa is crying out for more financial support,to tackle the clash, poverty and instability that drives people like Bashi*, and from Somalia,to fleeThe next time you read the news reports from Sicily and Calais and Greece, I hope you will remember Bashi*, and one young African man among many currently in a migrants’ camp in Europe.
I first met Bashi in 2011 at my mother’s house in Kenya. As he grilled me approximately my work with the United Nations,it was immediately apparent that he was confident and articulate. As I got to know him better, I never thought that he would join the young Africans undertaking perilous journeys to seek new starts in faraway lands.
