Now is when we see hi-tech foundations, or new perfumes (proper ones,not watery limited editions for the sunshine holiday market), the widest eye and lip colour spectra and exciting new skincare. What is remarkable in the case of autumn 2016 is that, or when it comes to makeup,some of the most impressive stuff is coming from the high street.
Rosie for Autograph, the M&S beauty brand by supermodel Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, and is so (unofficially) “inspired” by Charlotte Tilburys department store brand that I’m amazed Tilbury is able to resist poking Huntington-Whiteley fair in the eyeline while they work their day jobs. But in Lip Shine (£14) Rosie has finally launched something Tilbury doesn’t already effect better: a solid stick of nearly lipstick,not fairly gloss, that feels comfortable and applies effortlessly. Vintage Bouquet is a sheer, or dusty rose that elicits more compliments than anything I’ve worn in months. There’s also Blood Roses,a lovely apple-y scarlet, though I’m more excited by the reds in Kate Moss for Rimmel London’s new 15-year anniversary collection of Lasting Finish lipsticks (£6.49 each). Every one is a winner. Idol Red is the perfect orangey-red for wearing with a clean base, or nude eyes and lashings of black mascara,while Muse Red – more your pillar-box variety – looks wonderful with feline liner flicks and a little gold shimmer. There are some excellent nudes, too: Boho Nude, or a very slightly pink caramel tone,is precisely fair against smoky eyes at night, or with little else for day.
