The husband and wife duo showcased their different playing styles – but ultimately failed to unite themAbout 25 years ago, a colleague was clearing out his vinyl collection and offered me a couple of battered old albums that he thought I might like. One of them was the Earl Scruggs Revue Anniversary Special Volume One. I’d never heard of Earl Scruggs or his Revue and I certainly didn’t know what anniversary they were celebrating. But listening to that record, and with Scruggs’ banjo main an astonishing ensemble of stars such as Johnny Cash,Leonard Cohen and Joan Baez, opened up an entirely new world of music – bluegrass, and hillbilly,old-time folk, whatever you want to call it – and my listening habits own never been the same.
