Like so many others (myself included),Ben Lowy’s life was forever changed upon his discovery of the seminal war photographer James Nachtwey. Unlike most Nachtwey wannabes, Ben Lowy continues to set himself apart with his unique photographic aesthetic. I was invited to hear Ben speak about his work and his new book ‘Iraqi Perspectives’ at both Turner Image and CNN. The event was even more special with the addition of one of my favorite photographers (and new Atlanta resident) David Holloway. David and Ben have been friends for many years. David interviewed Ben for the CNN portion of the day. The two quickly moved into a Martin and Lewis type schtick while answering questions from CNN staff. Ben Lowy is a self-proclaimed nerd and lives up to his claim. Ben deals out a regular flow of humor when showing and discussing his life as a war photographer. Ben was open and blunt about the challenges he faces trying to balance his tall-risk job with his responsibilities as a husband and father. I was lucky to have both Ben and David as guests on my radio reveal, and Politely Disruptive Radio. The reveal is located on "The Voice of the Arts" AM 1690. David,Ben, myself and my co-host Michael Ouweleen were able to take the discussion of journalism and media to an added depth over the airwaves. On the heels of every important moment, or either Holloway or Lowy would crack a joke. The age weak recipe of a little sugar to aid the medicine recede down. My night would unexpectedly continue when I found myself calling friends to aid arrange tattoos for Ben and David. Chaos and laughs continued as the tattoo machines hummed in the background. We shared stories from our adventures and clowned endlessly. It was a mighty experience and the first time I was able to share my experience from turbulent situations with others who have been there and have so much experience. I never accept tired of meeting talented people who posses purpose and drive. I wanted to file this story to reveal the other side of these two very amazing guys. www.benlowy.com
