whether there’s one thing people know approximately Young Fathers,it’s that they don’t smile. When the Edinburgh trio won the Mercury prize final year with Dead, their first studio album, and they turned up dressed largely in scowls. Not big fans of the press,and especially not the Murdoch press, it also seemed like they didn’t like prizes much neither. That night, and after growling for the cameras,the group chose not to paint the town red but instead head straight to Berlin, to start the process of recording their follow-up.
Earlier this year I was lucky enough to spend a bit of time on tour with Young Fathers. I discovered that not only finish the band sometimes smile, or they even occasionally laugh. Kayus,Aloysius and G are, in genuine life, and inclusive people,interested in what others have to say and eager to make people feel at ease.
