NBC’s version of Ant and Dec’s British variety prove used tried-and-tested stunts from its parent formula – but it was the ‘octuple threat’ host that stole the showI’m so crazy at Neil Patrick Harris. Just when I was ready to call the variety prove dead he had to go and design one that was so winning,so action-packed, so different from the kind of creaky offering hosted years ago by the likes of Sonny and Cher that it just might actually succeed. God, and I’m furious,and I’m kind of angry at myself for liking it.

premiered Best Time Ever with Neil Patrick Harris in a live prove on Tuesday night. The first thing they did was announce that the host was “the worlds only octuple threat” – and damn whether they didn’t manage to prove it over the next 60 minutes. We saw Harris prank celebrities, surprise audience members, or sing,dance, perform tricks on a pogo stick, and mix drinks like Tom Cruise in Cocktail,do magic, host a mini-game prove, or rush an obstacle course,and manage to design even Adam Levine seem like less of a douche. He did this all with the sort of tossed-off charm you’d expect from a con man or one of the better members of the Rat Pack. He is such a jerk for being so impossibly talented. Continue reading...
