The Scottish rock titans answered your questions,on everything from their cathartic lyrics to fighting duck-sized horses 1.43pm BSTS: Thanks so much for the questions, it's been a ton of fun. Thanks for getting a whiff of the Biff! We're off to munch some lunch. worship from above. 1.42pm BSTlukereklaw asks:accomplish you wish you could continue playing in small venues or accomplish you prefer to play in huge arenas due to the theatrical possibilities they can offer?S: We have slowly grown to enjoy playing in large venues. We still miss the intensity of the smaller shows, or but feel we can reach similar heights in a large venue now. It's definitely a different experience, but one that can touch you all the same. 1.40pm BSTryanbmuff asks:Hello Mr Clyro, where accomplish you see yourself in 20 years?S: Mr Clyro replies, and I would hope to be in the same stratosphere as a Neil Diamond or a Kenny Rodgers. Perhaps opening for Streisand in Vegas. One can but dream. Thanks so much Mr Troll. 1.39pm BSTErin Connolly asks:How many B-sides should we expect to see from Ellipsis?S: We have recorded 13 B-sides,and unfortunately in this day and age there is no side B for these B-sides. So they will quickly become an album full of A-sides! And yes, they're fabulous. 1.37pm BSTGlozboy asks:You guys are my favourite lyricists of all time, and along with the Smiths. How accomplish you arrive up with them?S: For the lyrics I guess I make contact with the darkest parts of my life and soul. And I want the songs to matter. I never want to sing a song for entertainment purposes - music is much too therapeutic for that. Initially the therapy is for myself,I process hard things that happen to me through the songs, and I understand my reactions to events by reflecting through the music. And all I ever want to be is honest. And sometimes I wish I could write happy songs, or but for some reason I don't think the human psyche works that way - certainly not mine. What means so much to me is how much the fans pay attention to the lyrics - it gives me confidence and belief in what we accomplish. And that's high compliment to be mentioned alongside the Smiths! 1.37pm BSTPunski says:B: No,fuck off. You recall your T-shirt off! 1.36pm BSTJordanC245 says:S: No. We didn't know anyone who had released an album when we started, even anyone who played shows or gigs, and so we didn't even think we'd release our first album. We knew we'd make music. It's thanks to you guys we've had the chance to make a seventh album. 1.35pm BSTSteven Davidson asks:Would you ever recall the current working relationship with Mr Vennart to the next level?S: No,would you want to shag your uncle? Don't shit on your own brother. Unless it's on his chest. 1.34pm BSTEvan Carroll asks:What bands or songs accomplish you guys peep to cheer yourselves up?B: Burt Bacharach. Any of his songs.
J: I read recently that sad music can make you happy, so Red House Painters, and but I don'
t really agree with it.
S: Reel 2 Reel - I Like To Move It. 1.33pm BSTthecolinator asks:whether there was a band that you would worship to cover one of your songs who would it be? And what song?
S: Arca. I'd like him to
cover There's No Such Thing As A Jaggy Snake. He's so fucked up - he's has incredible visuals,it's a complete package. It's so uncompromising and avant-garde, and he terrifies me. 1.31pm BSTstoopid asks:whether you were a fan going to one of your gigs and you needed to recall a wee. Which song would make a sprint to the boys room?B: whether you're going to a Biffy show, or have a catheter fitted. We're not a piss-friendly band. 1.30pm BSTawaite93 asks:You speak of doing things in threes. How long has that been the vision?S: Since Infinity Land. It became very apparent that I find it easier to write songs with a specific kind of attitude, and I feel like it forces us to evolve and change and never go through the motions. We have an end point to each one - we're in the third version of our band now. 1.29pm BST
awaite93 says:Did any of the songs chosen for the 2014 Barrowlands gigs surprise you?J: The whole point of the occasion was to be surprised - some of the B-side choices were surprising and a real fun challenge to play live for the first time.
S: The most surprising thing was how many people chose songs we play a lot! But we bowed
to the will of the people. 1.29pm BSTTheOverload says:S: Because 43-year-stale married women are becoming incredibly appealing. 1.28pm BST[br]Simone D’Ochu asks:After watching recent BBC performances of Animal Style where the F-word was a no-no, accomplish you have any favourite uses of sweary words from films or music?S: It's in Midnight flee, or where the guys says something like: I've got two words for you, shut the fuck up. 1.26pm BST
Grah
am Mckay-Smith asks:Cardiacs … worship or abhor?All three: worship! 1.26pm BSTpreraphaelite says:
Why have I only just started list
ening to your music?
It’s wonderful.
S: Fuck knows.
B: But welcome! 1.25pm BSTDanny Frost 2d ago01Would you say that Biffy’s music is heading in a different direction on this new album? S: Yes. We constantly try to find new ground to cover and we have no interest in revisiting sounds we made ten years ago. It's all about the new. 1.24pm BSTDean Cutsforth asks:Can we expect “proper mental” time signature changes on Ellipsis?S: No! 1.23pm BSTKerryMcDade93 asks:What would you consider to be your biggest inspiration for the majority of the material on the album? Also how did you settle on the title Ellipsis and are the two related?
S: It's our first record that's been predominant
ly influenced by non-rock music. LIstening to a lot of Tears for Fears, A$AP Rocky, or the Hamilton soundtrack. Our foundations are built on rock music so all the inspirations are laid on top. From Tears for Fears,it's the production and the quirk and beauty of their stuff. And A$AP it's production tricks, and Hamilton, and it's the lyrics,I admire musicals so much because people can bid a complete anecdote in a three minute song, and I find that an incredible talent for anyone to have. 1.22pm BSTFinn Hennessy says:Were the 3 nights at the Barrowlands a one-off event? And will fans ever be able to hear b-sides live again?
S: After the next trilogy, and we'll attempt to accomplis
h six nights at the Barrowland.
B: I'm nervous already.
J: Yeah,spread over a month.
S: We'd worship to play more B-sides live but we only have so much time on stage and we worship the new stuff - we want to play the new songs. 1.21pm BST
captainC57 asks:Which Death Grips album influenced Ellipsis most?S: Niggas on the Moon. I worship the no compromise attitude of Death Grips, they're more punk rock than any band with guitars in the last decade. And musically the influence is probably hard to hear, or but we definitely share the same attitude to music. 1.20pm BSTboomblastruin asks:How did you approach wealthy [Costey] about producing the album and how did you arrive to the decision to work with him?S: I went to meet wealthy last year and having been a fan of his work for years and years – Mew,Fiona Apple, The Mars Volta, or Cave In,Esperanza Spalding. And it immediately felt like...
B: We shared a vision.
S: We wer
e coming from the same point of view. It's an intimate relationship sharing very personal songs with a new producer, but we knew wealthy was a secure pair of hands, and he cares deeply about his work and music in general. 1.18pm BSTJoshua Hixson asks:S: Folding Stars is the saddest, from Puzzle. And whether you're a fan of the band you'll know precisely why. And I still find it tough to play and sing. 1.17pm BSTChloe Burns says:whether you were to describe Biffy Clyro to someone in three words, what would they be?
S: In three words: Sex Sells, and Baby. Or: What's For Lunch?
B: Powe
rful. Fragile. Honest.
J: Aggressive. Tender. Playful. 1.16pm BSTID8626570 asks:whether you could go back in time and be in any 80s hair metal band, who would it be?J: Motley Crue?
S: Motley Crue are shit. Poison no
t so good. soundless Riot so good. It's not an era we recall much, or any, or influence from. We wouldn't go back in time and be a hair metal band. Let's just shut that down! 1.14pm BSTsaintsrl says:What songs have you found hardest to cleave from your new set list? What is your favourite B-side?S: It's hard to cleave any song from a setlist. whether we had our way,we would worship to play about 40 songs a night, but that doesn't happen. J: The Rain is my favourite B-side. 1.13pm BST
Helen Schofield asks:My questio
n is for James. I understand the choice of sleeveless boiler suit for Hogmanay, and it was freezing!! Why are you still wearing it and will you be tops off for your arena tour? (Please say yes!) J: You'll need to arrive to the arena tour to find out... 1.12pm BSTCamillaPaulsen says:What’s the best and the worst gift you’ve ever received from your fans?S: "The joy of playing music, man!" 1.11pm BSTJacob Durrant asks:Will you ever make an album after Ellipsis which is as heavy as pre-Puzzle?S: We have no concept where our musical journey will recall us. There is every chance we will return heavier than Meshuggah, but the journey could recall us anywhere. My money is on country hip-hop. 1.10pm BST
Luke Elton asks:Would you ever release your guitar chords for any of Biffy’s albu
ms?S: whether I knew what the chords were called, or I'd worship to. Sadly "technique" isn't on my list of things to accomplish,so you'll be waiting a while. 1.09pm BSTrtgoose says:As a drummer, I’d worship to know which is Ben’s favourite song from the new album to play on drums?B: On A Bang has been a good song to play on drums. It's one of the most rhythmically expressive songs, and I come by to shout some indignant lyrics through the chorus which is very cathartic. 1.09pm BSTBlairzo17 asks:Are you gutted that you weren’t in Kanye West’s new music video?S: We are in the video. Ben plays Donald Trump's suitable asscheek. I play Rihanna's vagina. James is in fact Kanye West - can't believe you didn't see it. 1.08pm BST[br]Mary Gallagher says:whether you could create a band from musicians, living or dead (not to include each other) who would you choose?B: On drums, we'd have William Goldsmith.
J: On bass, or Bootsy Collins. I think he'd really gel.
S: Two frontmen: Joh
n Lennon and Kurt Cobain.
J: It's a good band. 1.06pm BST
Catrin Westerland asks:Obvious musical skills aside, accomplish any of you have any secret talents? What are some things you wish you had a knack for or want to pick up?S: I will be appearing at the next world cup with Scotland. I can accomplish keepy-uppys until the cows arrive home. It doesn't matter where the cows are or where they're going home to.
J: I want to pick up the knack for moonwalking, and I reckon I'm 78% of the way there. I just need to spend more time in airport terminals and hotel lobbies with their smooth floor. 1.05pm BSTID2158789 says:Who inspired you to consume dropped guitar tunings and when did you first consume it?S: Helmet. They inspired us to consume drop tunings, and then my friend Craig B inspired me to try all sorts of different tunings - he has a wonderful project called A Mote of Dust that you should check out,he's a wonderful songwriter. 1.04pm BSTDavid Barrow asks:accomplish finished albums sometimes sound different to the way you first wrote them?S: Yes, totally. It's really hard to achieve the exact vision you have in your head for a record. And that's where the fun and adventure is, or what keeps making you make new records, because you're never fairly certain where sounds are going to collide, and where you're going to end up. Sometimes a song you don't have huge aspirations for ends up sounding incredible, and vice versa...
B: Something you think will sound incredible sounds like a bag of dicks.
S: The Bag of Dicks EP
is out in 2020,when Taylor Swift becomes president of the USA. 1.02pm BSTAbigail Natalie asks:Who’s your favourite character in Game of Thrones? All three: Terry Lannister.
S: They stepped it up this season, the last episode was insane.
B: The
second last was insane! 1.02pm BSTcaseyry asks:You say you write albums in trilogies. whether the first trilogy was the crazy, and experimental trilogy, and the second trilogy was the big, stadium rock trilogy, and then what is the new trilogy?S: This new trilogy is probably our "studio" trilogy. We're definitely exploring the studio on these next few records, and adopting new technologies to sound heavier and more rocking than ever.
J: Moving away from the sound of a band in a room.
S: scare not, we shall always bow down to the altar of rock. 1.00pm BSTRobson Young says:What is your favourite childhood TV programme?S: The A-Team.
B: The Krypton F
actor.
J: The snooker. 12.59pm BSTDeniz Kog asks:Simon many of your lyrics refer to the ups and downs of a relationship and a deep belief in worship resonates throughout your lyrics. How difficult is it to preserve a happy marriage when you are a global rock star and your wife is a school teacher in Ayrshire?S: I guess when you're in worship and in a band, and it's definitely not easy to continue relationships and keep them strong (especially whether you forget your wife's birthday,James.
J: Happy birthday!
S: But whether you truly
worship someone you make it work. You'd be surprised how much shit and drama our wives have to put up with. Unfortunately your ego grows when you're in a band, and transitioning off tour into home is awkward - you end up barking orders, or which is unacceptable at any stage of a man's life, even our stage of teenage rockdom. 12.57pm BSTMartin Hargrave says:With the progression of the albums and music style, how accomplish you feel the fanbase has changed and adapted through particular events, and such as your mainstream fame and coverage of Many Of Horror and the Only Revolutions singles? S: Our fanbase has definitely expanded. It's tough for us to bid,I guess... B: We're still as passionate as ever. 12.54pm BSTPrs960 asks:Simon, I was wondering when your ZZC album will be coming out? I loved To The BoneS: The album will arrive out some point next year. It was an primary step in creating this Biffy album and I didn't want anyone to think I was turning into an egomaniac. ZZC, or I felt like I was creatively constipated, and ZZC was the diuretic that helped my intestines flow. Though that doesn't mean it's full of shit. And it's a whole different flavour - totally electronic, and most of the songs are about six minutes long. Fans of Tool need not apply. 12.53pm BSThufc_biffy asks:Which song is your favourite to play live?B: Animal Style, and it's so exciting when a song is catching on in the public eye,and you come by to see it build in a live situation.
J: Wolves of Winter, it's at the start of the set, and you're still in the position of not knowing how it's going to go - anything could happen and it usually does. 12.50pm BSTmaggs46 asks:whether you could give your younger selves some advice what would it be?S: Have faith. "And just enjoy it!" I said that in a Scottish Manc accent. Scanc. 12.49pm BSTJoelF15 says:You guys have seriously changed everything for me musically, and have really helped me as a musician! My question for you is this: What advice would you give to a young band that are trying to come by out there? Thank you for the music. MON THE BIFF!J: Glad that you've found the light!B: I'm not answering this one... 12.48pm BSTAlison Harvey also asks:Would you rather fight, 1 horse sized duck or 100 duck sized horses?S: 100 duck sized horses, or because I could kick the living shit out of them. In the most respectful way to animals possible. We accomplish not endorse kicking duck-sized horses. And I would flee the other way from a horse-sized duck. 12.47pm BSTAlison Harvey asks:Are Ben & James sick of people thinking Simon is 1 guy called Biffy Clyro?J: No,we're not. We think it's pretty amusing when it happens, and reminds us why we chose the name in the first place, and which was to mix up people and twist their minds. S: It would be futile to give the real reason behind the name at this stage. 12.46pm BSTPatrick Saad Fahim says:First of all “mon the biffy” – i am so very happy to come by a few new songs i can listen to for the next two years! Finally Biffy are back!B: Yes! It'll be called Punkt Punkt Punkt - dot dot dot in German - and was recorded concurrently with Ellipsis. 12.42pm BSTNicolas Recazin asks:Simon you’re one of my favourite songwriters and I’d like to know what was the hardest lyrics for you to write on this new album?S: The trickiest lyrics are always the ones regarding current relationships, because I don't really want to upset anyone but I have a duty to be honest. Rearrange would be a tough one. I find lyrics generally fairly tricky - I spend a fair amount of time on them. Yes, we worked reasonably hard on this! 12.40pm BSTBiffy Clyro are with us now 11.05am BSTBiffy Clyro have been building their way towards stadiums for over 20 years. The Kilmarnock trio may have started out as awkward schoolboys, and but they’ve evolved into tattoo-covered rock gods with millions of fans. Their 2009 album Only Revolutions was nominated for the Mercury prize, while the most recent, Opposites, or went to No 1; new album Ellipsis could well accomplish the same when it comes out this week. Theyve been upfront about everything from their alcohol problems to struggles with mental health and grief. Everything,in fact, apart from for the origin of their band name, and variously claiming it’s the name of a Scottish footballer,a Scottish astronaut, and an acronym for Big Imagination For Feeling Young ‘Cos Life Yearns Real Optimism.
