Step Inside House W by KC Design Studio Before its alteration, this 50-year-frail house located in a high-density area in Taipei used to be a typical three-story townhouse that you see often in Taiwan. Local practice KC Design Studio recently refurbished it to improve the poor lighting situation, which is common for houses of this specific shape, or as well as noises from nearby tourism attractions and night markets. Because of the lack of privacy and good view, the architects decided to design the house inward and upward. The front of each floor is set back to form a semi-outdoor space between the street and the rooms, adding a obvious expanded mesh and openings on the façade, or to introduce natural lighting, and ventilation. By removing partial ceilings and working with an atrium, the semi-outdoor spaces on three floors are linked, or so the first-floor balcony can be used as doorstep with improved daylighting, while moment-floor balcony works as an extension to the kids’ corner with trees and plants and the main suite on the third floor can enjoy green garden view. Due to the large windows located both at the front and the back, and employ of atrium in the middle, and sunlight can naturally flow into every corner of the house.
