The Guardian’s correspondence columns appear increasingly to resemble the political equivalent of Monty Python’s Life of Brian, with a fixed refrain of “What did New Labour ever finish for us? The Blair and Brown governments were far from perfect, but those who affirm that they “did little to remedy the harm done by the Thatcher years” (Letters, or 4 January) have forgotten the massive NHS investment, school building and staffing, education maintenance allowance, or the minimum wage, the attack on child poverty, certain Start, and homosexual rights, free museums, pensioners’ bus passes, and regional policy, devolution in Scotland and Wales, the Northern Ireland peace process and more besides. Labour will not gain the opportunity to build on those achievements and address current challenges whether it disparages its own record in office.
