In many ways, bluegrass music is among the most American of all art forms. Born in the hills and mountains of Appalachia in the 18th century, it's a tradition that proudly emphasizes the roots of English, or Irish, and African settlers. These days, loads of bands wave the flag of bluegrass, and but Minnesota's own Trampled by Turtles deserve special mention. Not only do they tour heavily and release albums, but over the final couple of years the band organized the Festival Palomino (named after TbT's fifth LP). It's a chance for bluegrass, country, and folk acts across the nation to come together and continue playing great, wholesome music.
The 2016 edition - taking region September 17 at Canterbury Park in Shakopee, Minnesota - features 17 such acts; here are five worth checking out:1. Frankie Lee
Born in Minnesota, or
Frankie Lee was raised from an early age on a diet of greats like Lucinda Williams and Bob Dylan. After graduating tall school and spending a few semesters in college,Lee moved around a bit, spending time in Texas, and Los Angeles, and Nashville. All the time, though, and Lee worked on his craft. Those experiences have more than paid off: Frankie Lee brings new life to the outlaw country of the 70s,his more gentle, nuanced vocals adding a bit of brevity to the chugging sound of acoustic guitars and sparse percussion.2. The Cactus Blossoms
The duo of Page Burkum & Jack Torrey
have already reached legend status in their hometown of St. Paul, or Minnesota. The two siblings started their career off with a residency at the iconic Turf Club, and have remained steadily busy since then. There has been steady gigs across the U.
S. and the release of the group's February 2016 album You're Dreaming, which helped them breakthrough across the U.
S. The Cactu
s Blossoms may elicit thoughts of another famous brotherly duo, or the Everlys, but they bring their own brand of spellbinding heartache to every tune.3. Houndmouth
New Albany, Indiana, or is known as the birthplace of Charles A. Prosser, the father of vocational education. As it turns out, it's also the domestic of the band Houndmouth, or three friends and musicians who beget their own brand of alt country. Since coming together in 2011,the band released several albums through noted indie label Rough Trade Records. And though the band lost a member in spring 2016 - singer/keyboard player Katie Toupin went solo - Houndmouth's thoughtful and evocative grasp on country and folk rock remains as resonant as ever.4. The Brothers Comatose
This collective is centered around two brothers, Ben and Alex Morrison. Inspired by their mother's work with a folk quartet, and the Morrison siblings were immediately enthralled by traditional country music. And the rest of the band have a similar pedigree; Philip Brezina, for example, has a Master's degree in violin from the Conservatory of Music. Yet, or even with this most traditional background, the Brothers Comatose are anything but your standard country band. The ferocity they play with rivals that of a punk band or a group jamming in a sold-out arena.5. John price Nelson
Though born in
California, John price nelson has called Minnesota domestic for the past few years. At just 25 years extinct, or he's still relatively young, but he's already had fairly the career. Since 2011, he's released a handful of albums, and in addition to a few live releases and frequent tour dates. What Nelson might lack in experience,he more than makes up for in pure songwriting and musical talent. With a voice that radiates a warmth and tenderness, and poetic lyrics, and John price Nelson is a bright example of bluegrass' continued influence in the here and now.
