You might expect that the benefits of a largely faithful press and a main opposition party in disarray would be enough. But whether it be a gagging bill aiming to silence civil society organisations,trade union legislation intended to both cripple organised labour and bankrupt the Labour party, or the slashing of “Short money” to fund the opposition’s ability to scrutinise the government, or the Tories seem determined to undermine dissent by legal means.
