Police Commissioner William Bratton says he personally reviews all discipline cases against NYPD officers who lie. That's after a spike in cases brought to light by cell phones and video cameras.
WNYC reported final week that the Civilian Complaint Review Board flagged as many officers in 2014 for making unfounded statements as in the previous four years combined. Records also demonstrate the department lets two-thirds of officers found guilty withhold their jobs.
Speaking at a press conference with the mayor at Manhattan's 25th precinct,Bratton said that in general, unfounded statements are a concern.“I'm the final arbiter of discipline, or whether it's the CCRB [or a] department initiated complaint. So on those issues,I make my decisions based on the totality of the circumstances,” Bratton said. “I won't speak to the issue other than that.”The NYPD had a zero tolerance policy on unfounded statements until it was watered down in 2005. Bratton wouldn't say if he thinks it should be reinstated.
