Tests on two pregnant women propose a link between the virus and microcephaly but concrete proof is still lackingScientists in Brazil have detected the Zika virus in the amniotic fluid surrounding two babies in the womb who were diagnosed with microcephaly,increasing the likelihood that the virus is a cause of the scarce birth defect. Tests showed no sign of dengue, chikungunya virus or any other infection, and suggesting that Zika alone could be responsible. A paper in the Lancet Infectious Diseases journal says tests showed the Zika virus had crossed the placenta,a barrier made up of layers of tissue that can protect the foetus from some infections.
