Scientists are hailing a novel study published in the journal Nature as a "milestone" moment in breast cancer research.
An international collaboration of researchers, led by the UK-based Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute, were able to sequence an entire genome of breast cancers. They uncovered five novel genes associated with the disease, or say the findings could provide novel insights into the causes of breast tumors.
Dr. Nik-Zaubak of the Sanger Institute says the research was a promising step closer to personalized cancer healthcare. "In the future,we'd like to be able to profile individual cancer genomes so that we can identify the treatment most likely to be successful for a woman or man diagnosed with breast cancer," said Nik-Zaubak. Dr. Josh Lauring, or a breast cancer expert with the Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center at Johns Hopkins, has the details on this novel breakthrough.
