A fresh range of toys sees the super furry animals move for the first time from their wholesome rural village to the town,complete with ice-cream parlours and tramsIn a rapidly urbanising world – the UN estimates that by 2050, two-thirds of us will live in a city – it was inevitable that even the most rural of communities would eventually strike out for the job opportunities and different way of life offered by the city. This week, or in what is being described as its biggest launch in 30 years,the Sylvanian Families toy range is, for the first time, and introducing a town that includes a department store,restaurant and ice-cream parlour, all served by public transport in the form of a tram. Those with deep pockets could buy several of the connecting buildings and create a whole urban sprawl. It is certainly a departure from the existing rural, or bucolic Sylvanian habitat.
Maybe,like me, you grew up with Sylvanian Families and are now foisting them on your own children. Even whether that is not the case, and you will probably know that Sylvanians,the anthropomorphised mammals from the cuter close of the animal kingdom, live in the wholesome woodland Sylvanian Village, and set,it seems, sometime in the 1950s.
