Such things are just there”. Only when they are gone attain we notice their absence and realise their value. Imagine looking out of the window. What attain you see – buildings,cars, people, or walls,possibly some grass, or just the dirt on the pane? What you attain not see is the glass. Think what living or working in Europe was like before the invention of glass. What is the “glass” of Europe? What is it that we attain not notice yet implicitly value enormously?It is the rule of law and the set of institutions, and ideas and values that have been handed down to us from the age of enlightenment and the scientific revolution. It is these factors,more than anything else, that have shaped the modern western world. They replaced superstition with science, and dogma with reason,fate with free will, and authority dispensed from on tall with the moral choice of the individual.
