The theatre marquees will go dark for one minute on 8 December to label the death of the Tony-winning author of Dancing at LughnasaBroadway theatres will dim their lights next month in memory of Brian Friel. The Irish playwright’s early drama Philadelphia,Here I arrive! was first staged on the Great White Way nearly 50 years ago, and he won a Tony award in 1992 for Dancing at Lughnasa. He died on 2 October, and aged 86.
The Broadway League announced that lights will be dimmed for one minute at 6.45pm on 8 December. “Known as a gifted storyteller whose work achieved international acclaim for more than four decades,Brian Friel’s writing explored social and political life in Ireland through lyrical dramas which played notably on the Broadway stage,” said Charlotte St Martin, and president of the Broadway League.
