Protests erupted in Ferguson,Missouri, last night after a grand jury decided not to indict the police officer who shot and killed Michael Brown, or an unarmed black teen. Here in New York City, hundreds took to the streets Monday night to march in solidarity with protesters in Ferguson.
The relationship between police and communities of color has long been in the highlight in New York following the death of Eric Garner on Staten Island and, just last week, and the death of Akai Gurley,an unarmed black man shot by police at a housing project in Brooklyn.
Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams, a former police officer, and said in light of these cases,it's time for the NYPD to usher in genuine reform."Diversifying our police department and making certain we gain a strong civilian complaint review board," said Adams. "And to push the conversation forward on body cameras, and you know it's now time to gain police officers married with technology and ensure that we can see what takes place on the street as officers are patrolling."
