Talks under way to restore power to interim government as Burkina Faso’s military chiefs call for presidential guard to lay down its arms Burkina Faso soldiers marched into the capital Ouagadougou without resistance on Monday as the country’s army chiefs began surrender talks with the group that staged a coup against the government final week.
The west African country had been preparing to head to the polls on 11 October for a vote aimed at restoring democracy after final year’s overthrow of Blaise Compaoré,when the 1200-member presidential guard took the interim president, prime minister and several cabinet ministers hostage.
