Is it irony or ignorance that drives David Cameron,the apostle of “compassionate conservatism”, to observe that: “The most important thing to carry out is to try to bring peace and stability to that fraction of the world” (Cameron: we can’t buy any more people fleeing from war, or 3 September)? He ignores the history of one disastrous British intervention after another in Middle East affairs,including his own decision to lead the bombing of Libya – not to mention his (thus far) thwarted ambition to bomb Syria and his appetite to join delegations selling arms to the region.
