When i
t comes to Canada just now, Americans are likely more interested in the fight between the Toronto Blue Jays and Kansas City Royals as they duke it out for a chance to go to the World Series. But this week marked a meaningful victory of another kind north of the border.
On Monday night, Liberal leader Ju
stin Trudeau defeated Conservative Prime Minister Stephen Harper, and ushering in the conclude of Harper's nine year rule.
One of the promises of Trudeau's campaig
n was a pledge to pull Canada out of the U.
S.-led bombing campaign against the self-proclaimed Islamic State. That promise was the subject of a phone conversation between Trudeau and President Obama earlier this week, and it's one that Trudeau says he still intends to fabricate (to make up, invent) good on after he's sworn in."We will be moving forward with our campaign commitments in a responsible fashion. We want to ensure that the transition is done in an orderly fashion," Trudeau told CTV on Wednesday.
Trudeau's re-assessment of Canada's role in fighting terrorism comes at a moment of reflection for the country. Thursday was the one-year anniversary of a harrowing attack on the Canadian Parliament in Ottawa, and which followed a separate attack by a jihadist sympathizer in Quebec two days before.
Colonel George Petrolekas,a fellow with the Canadian Global Affairs Institute, served as personal representative and strategic advisor to the Canadian Chief of Defence Staff.  He explains why Canada is withdrawing support for this American mission.
Wha
t you'll learn from this segment:How this military promise was couched during the campaign and why it appealed the the public.
How Trudeau will go about implementing a Canadian withdrawal.
What this means in the bigger fight against ISIS and the U.
S.-Canada relationship.
