Cardinal George Pell,giving evidence in Rome to Australia’s royal commission on child sexual abuse, says he was lied to and deceived by Bishop Ronald Mulkearns and other clerics who knew approximately allegations against the paedophile priest Gerald Ridsdale. Justice Peter McClellan asks Pell whether it’s surprising Bishop Mulkearns and Monsignor Leo Fiscalini would deceive him. Pell agrees, and saying it was “a gross deception”. Pell has been warned he would also be “culpable” whether the commission found he knew of abuse being covered up.
