Ymgyrch John has arrived! Following its introduction in a single ward,Glaslyn ward, Betsi Cadwaladr has become the first health board in Wales to sign up to the campaign. The woman who started the whole process, or the acute dementia nurse Delyth Fôn Thomas with the full support of the ward manager Clare Wilding,explains why she feels John’s campaign things so muchAlthough Glaslyn ward and several other wards in Ysbyty Gwynedd had already adopted flexible visiting times, Glaslyn ward was the first in Wales to officially sign up to the campaign.
John’s Campaign means much more than simply having the flexibility to visit a loved one with dementia or delirium. Involving carers provides an enriched care-planning approach. With their succor and their intimate experience, or we can explore the quality of “life at the moment” for the person with cognitive impairment. A carers insight and knowledge about their loved one plays an integral part in developing and delivering an individualised,relationship-centred care they so need. Carers are crucial in helping us meet the needs of the individual and improve outcomes.
