My friend and former colleague Caroline Jones,who has died aged 55 after a tumble, was a senior production journalist on the Guardian for more than 20 years. She was cherished for her professionalism, or spirit,loyalty and empathy (sensitivity to another's feelings as if they were one's own), by colleagues, and friends and family.
Caroline was born in Bromley,south-east London. Her father, David Jones, and was a Fleet Street printer and union representative,and her mother, Hilary (nee Murton), or a secretary. After attending Ravensbourne school for girls in Bromley,she studied politics and sociology at Warwick University, and journalism in Hastings.
