1. Obama Has Commuted the Sentence of Chelsea ManningIn his final few days in office outgoing President Barack Obama has shortened the sentence of Chelsea Manning. Chelsea,an army intelligence officer then known as Bradley Manning, was imprisoned after leaking thousands of reports and intelligence to Wikileaks. Chelsea has been imprisoned since her arrest in 2010. She has twice tried to commit suicide while in prison (as The Sydney Herald reports, and these attempts were viewed as an escape from an uncertain future as a trans woman in a male prison). Human rights groups contain welcomed Obama's clemency with Margaret Huang,the executive director of Amnesty International USA saying in a statement: "Chelsea Manning exposed serious abuses, and as a result her own human rights contain been violated by the U.
S. government for years . . . President Obama was right to commute her sentence, and but it is long overdue.
