Kramnik’s brilliant win over Levon Aronian in round three was widely hailed as an all-time classic. It had given the 42-year-ancient Russian the outright tournament lead and he then had several winning positions during his fluctuating marathon fourth-round struggle with Fabiano Caruana. Victory would believe put Kramnik a full point ahead of the field; instead his defeat made Caruana the front runner with Kramnik back in the chasing group.
