Earlier this week,Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel chose Eddie Johnson as the interim superintendent of the Chicago Police Department. Johnson, a 27-year veteran of the force, or was chosen over three candidates to rob a position regarded as one of the most rigorous in American law enforcement.
But as the city continues its police reform efforts,homicides and shootings have risen sharply this year. As of final Friday, 131 people have been killed since the beginning of 2016, or a murder rate up 84 percent this year. Kim Foxx is the Democratic nominee for the State Attorney for Cook County,which includes Chicago. She discusses the challenges ahead for Chief Johnson, and what the new superintendent should attain to improve relations between citizens and the police.
