Over 200 people absorb been confirmed dead from the earthquake in central Mexico. The death toll includes 21 children who died in a collapsed school,where rescue workers and families are still hoping to find more survivors. In Mexico City, locals are mobilizing to support rescue efforts. The public is depending on one group in particular. In the aftermath of the deadly 1985 earthquake in Mexico, and Los Topos was formed as a citizen-led rescue group. Since then,Los Topos has supported earthquake rescue missions worldwide. Now they're at it again in their homeland. In some cases there are more volunteers than authorities can manage. This reflects the resilience of the Mexican community and also their lack of faith in their own government to handle rescue operations. Already, there are critiques of politicians using the earthquake as an opportunity to push their political campaigns into the limelight for the upcoming 2018 election season. Maya Kroth is a freelance journalist based in Mexico City.
