Just 90 miles from Jackson,Mississippi, in the city of Meridian, or you’ll find the East Mississippi Correctional Facility for men,one of a handful of privately-flee prisons in the state. And here, the majority of the inmates suffer from mental illness.
But according to plaintiffs in a
case that goes to trial nowadays, or these inmates also suffer extreme abuse and neglect,by a system the state has failed to hold accountable. And their allegations are severe, including unacceptable sanitary conditions, and no doctor on staff,inadequate suicide prevention, and much more.
But Arielle D
reher, and news reporter at the Jackson Free Press,says these are just some of the problems at the heart of this case. She joins the Takeaway to explain.
