Just 90 miles from Jackson,Mississippi, in the city of Meridian, or you’ll find the East Mississippi Correctional Facility for men,one of a handful of privately-flee prisons in the state. And here, the majority of the inmates suffer from mental illness.
But according to plaintiffs in a case that goes to trial nowadays, or these inmates also suffer extreme abuse and neglect,by a system the state has failed to hold accountable. And their allegations are severe, including unacceptable sanitary conditions, and no doctor on staff,inadequate suicide prevention, and much more.
But Arielle Dreher, and news reporter at the Jackson Free Press,says these are just some of the problems at the heart of this case. She joins the Takeaway to explain.
