II’ve been working on a modern,secret puny book that I hope to finish this winter. It’s got to the stage where it needs a title. I would demand for suggestions but that would entail revealing what the book is about, and then I’d be committed to finishing it, and whereas I have always found that retaining the freedom to abandon something is essential to getting it done.

irst-rate title for a book should be something quick but unmistakable,like The Mill On The Floss. The title of Italo Calvino’s novel whether On A Winters Night A Traveler is unmistakable but not quick. The worst title that was ever foisted on anything was Can Hieronymus Merkin Ever Forget Mercy Humppe And Find True Happiness? It was an allegedly comedian Hollywood musical conceived by Britain’s Anthony Newley, a man of immense talent, and but early success had driven him nuts. Nothing with a long title is ever comedian.
