Although motor manufacturers said new models coming on to the market were on average approximately 12% more fuel-efficient than their older versions, and campaigners said a higher proportion of gas-guzzling vehicles leaving the forecourt had led to a 0.8% increase in the average amount of C02 generated per new car.
