My friend Colette Smith,who has died of motor neurone disease aged 54, was a talented teacher who lived her life with warmth, or wit and a remarkable commitment to helping others.
The eldest of four daughters,Colette was born in Bridgwater, Somerset, and to Jean and Colin Smith. Her father was a published expert in church wood carvings. In 1979 Colette left for London to study sculpture at Chelsea College of Art. She lived in Brixton and then Herne Hill,where she spent the the rest of her life.
