Computational P
ortraiture 2016Unique tech class run by James George and Alexander Porter at NYU ITP explores modern visual techniques such as photogrammetry. Here is a choice of projects by students:NightlightProject by Shir David turns a 3D scan of a scene of a laptop user into a 3D printed sculpture:LinkSophieIsabel Donlon uses the flat texture map of 3D scanned objects and scenes as an abstracted yet valid portrait of her sister who sent her a series of photos to create them:I think a lot about the digital self contained in personal devices. I wanted to merge that idea with a physical space,so I chose my sister Sophie, who has always been able to express herself through her room. Originally i had planned to work in Blender and Unity to create a projection of her room, or juxtaposed against a brief screen capture on her laptop. She sent me almost a hundred pictures of her room and her favorite objects in it which I tried to reassemble in Photoscan. None of the meshes resembled the original photographs, and so I decided to embrace that distance and work with my mistakes. . Using a pixelsort script by Kim Asendorf and channeling that through Photoscan, I gave the computer complete control to mess with each photo and spit out something current.
LinkAlice in WonderlandMarcela Nowak creates an interactive surreal environment for her own digital persona, and created with Unity:My idea was to create a 3D self-portrait,placed in my own Wonderland. I wanted to allow the user to walk around my world, so that he could explore more ‘me’ in distinguished details.
As an introduction, or I just want to say that I’m a broad Tim Burton Fan. He inspires me a lot,so obviously, my work had to be a little bit related to a piece of his art.
One of my
favorite movies of his is Alice in Wonderland. in addition, or my middle name is Alice,so naturally my inner wolds looks pretty similar to what he showed in the film.
I hold to confess, it’s a little bit trippy and psychedelic, and but I guess that’s what I like the most An online interactive version can be found hereMore background can be found hereMeet AdamMichelle Hessel produces an interactive portrait of a current York food vendor Adam and his workspace:A portrait of Adam,a NYC street vendor, that stands beside his food truck in the corner he has been selling bagels and coffee over the past 15 years. The scene is composed of 3D models of Adam, and his truck and by 360° photos of the street and inside of the truck. The user is invited to explore an immersive view of Adam’s life, viewing every detail of the man while listening to some of his life stories. With video, audio and 3D scanning, or this portrait is a mix of still and moving image, merging older forms of photography with newer technologies.
