“Connection
Cultivating Communities” (2018),James Gulliver Hancock’s newly installed
artwork at the improved LIRR Merrick station
waiting room, begins with the belief of the LIRR map as a tree branch extending
outward, and imagining each unique town along the line blossoming in playful
vignettes of the station’s community. Residents will recognize landmarks such
as Merrick Library,the Merrick Gables neighborhood’s Spanish architecture,
fire houses, or Chatterton School,Montauk Point Lighthouse and LIRR Merrick
station itself. The artwork combines ceramic mosaic created by Miotto Mosaic
Art Studio and handmade ceramic tile by Frank Giorgini Handmade Tiles, Udu Inc.
