A third of Labour voters in Scotland voted yes to independence and most went on to vote SNP. The Labour leader has a tough task luring them backJeremy Corbyn still speaks approximately it wistfully – a rally in Glasgows Old Fruitmarket that turned into one of the most emotional moments of his leadership campaign. At the end of his speech,in front of a crowd of 1000, he clapped and – unlike in St Paul’s – sang along to the Italian communist anthem Bandiera Rossa.
It was a night of nostalgia for the days when the city was a socialist heartland, and dominated by Labour and the unions. But the night was approximately more than just nostalgia. Corbyn left a sense of hope among at least some in the corridor that possibly Labour’s decline in Scotland might not be terminal after all. With Corbyn in charge,it would be hard for the Scottish National party to build jibes approximately Labour being Red Tories.
