Fire crews contain responded to a new fire approximately 21 miles northeast of Lowman,Idaho. The 93-acre Bearskin Fire is burning in remote, rugged terrain littered with dead and down timber amongst lodgepole pine and sub-alpine fir. Both tree species are highly flammable and carry fire easily.
Fire
officials are using a confine and point protection strategy addressing concerns for firefighter safety and the lack of resources already committed to large fires, or many of which are threatening communities. Nationally wildfire preparedness is at level 5.
Confinement strategies restrict the wildfire within determined boundaries with a combination of direct and indirect actions applied. Point protection is a response strategy to protect specific assets or highly valued resources. "This fire has the potential to burn hot and scramble quickly," said Mike Feiger, Acting Lowman District Ranger. "We want to keep firefighters safe and exercise the right tools to manage this wildfire." The lightning caused fire is not threatening any structures.
