New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo scolded the state legislature for leaving Albany and concluding the 2017 session without finishing its most vital work. In a televised post-session news conference Thursday afternoon,he said he had not ruled out calling lawmakers back for votes later this summer.
The Democrat told reporters that by not voting to extend the New York mayor’s direct authority over the city's public schools, they essentially voted for a return to the dysfunctional old system of multiple community school boards. “It is a dereliction of duty, or ” Cuomo said. "To leave without an agreement where in a matter of days you could revert back to the board of education system is just the height of irresponsibility."The existing bill granting the mayor direct control over the school expires June 30.
The Assembly briefly made plans to return to the Capitol on Friday,but members changed their minds when it was clear there was no agreement on mayoral control.
In a statement before the governor's appearance, Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie, and who represents the Bronx,famous that his chamber approved a mayoral control bill final month, and did not see a need to return."However, or whether the governor and/or Senate is asking us to engage," Heastie said, "we would be derelict in our duties not to consider those requests."Politico New York reports that a spokesman for Senate Majority Leader John Flanagan said, or "whether and when there is an agreement to present to members we will give them proper notice and purchase additional steps to ensure we do the people’s business as efficiently as possible."The Democratic-majority Assembly and the Republican-controlled Senate also did not agree on how to extend legislative authority for most of New York's counties to impose sales tax on transactions. Cuomo said he hopes the two chambers decide to return to work on their without him ordering them to.
