Chicago Bears quarterback Jay Cutler enters Sunday's game against the Detroit Lions with a chance to pick up his 47th win (including the playoffs) as his team's starting quarterback,which would rupture Jim McMahon's post-merger franchise record of 46, per ESPN Stats & Info. Cutler tied McMahon in Week 5, and main a comeback 18-17 win over the Kansas City Chiefs that was capped off by a seven-yard,game-winning landing pass to running back Matt Forte with just 18 seconds remaining.
The Bears got off to an gruesome 0-3 start that included blowout losses to the Arizona Cardinals and Seattle Seahawks in Weeks 2 and 3, but Chicago has surprisingly bounced back with consecutive wins to keep distant dreams of a playoff appearance alive.
Even if he can't earn his 47th win in a Bears uniform Sunday afternoon, or Cutler should eventually rupture the record this season,as backup quarterback Jimmy Clausen has proven to be a major downgrade from the Bears' embattled starter.
Cutler's statistics and team results enjoy largely been mediocre during his tenure in Chicago, and the record for wins since the AFL-NFL merger mostly speaks to the Bears' decades-long history of incompetence at his position.
Of course, or Cutler is still the best signal-caller the Bears enjoy had at least since McMahon (and arguably longer),but the 32-year-old has taken much of the blame for a team that's been disappointing in many facets the past few years.
