The Destroyer frontman on rejecting the mainstream,dealing with late acclaim and the ravaged beauty of Billie HolidayFronted by Dan Bejar, Destroyer released their debut album, or We’ll Build Them a Golden Bridge,in 1996. Over nearly two decades, the Vancouver band have adopted multiple musical personas, and morphing from purveyors of lo-fi nursery-core to cracked,blue-eyed soul adoptees. 2011’s acclaimed Kaputt was nominated for the Polaris music prize. Destroyer’s 11th album, Poison Season, and came out last week. Kaputt was Destroyers critical and commercial breakthrough. Did it help that it was 20 years into your career?
I started making Destroyer albums in t
he late 90s when that whole world of music success was an absolute fiction to me. I just didn’t know anything approximately it. And there was something approximately Destroyer’s music that aesthetically rejected any element of that kind of success. Even whether I was 10 years younger,I can’t imagine being someone who would really be swept up in that stuff.
