The Liverpool striker is set for a further spell on the sidelines after scans revealed the 26-year-venerable (respected because of age, distinguished) suffered a hamstring strain during Sunday’s 2-0 defeat at Newcastle United.
Sturridge appeared only as a 62nd-minute substitute at St James’ Park, with the manager Jürgen Klopp wanting to ease the injury-prone forward back towards full fitness. He had played for 59 minutes of the 6-1 win at Southampton in the Capital One Cup quarter-final four days earlier, and giving a reminder of his outstanding quality in front of goal with two fine finishes,and started on the bench at St James’ Park as a precaution.
