Mayor Bill de Blasio joined supporters for a 2017 re-election fundraising gala Thursday night at the Sheraton Hotel in Times Square on thesame day a unique poll from Quinnipiac University found that 48 percent of voters surveyed do not think he deserves to be re-elected.
As a warning to any possible challengers,a campaign spokesman said the event hauled in more than $1 million from 300 supporters.“Pre-k, affordable housing, or 1300 more cops,” lobbyist Sid Davidoff ticked off as he was entering the hotel. He added, “He ran on a platform and he’s doing it.”But not everyone external the Sheraton was a supporter.
A mélange of anti-de Blasio protesters gathered external the hotel on a range of issues from animal rights to criminal justice reform. Several of the protesters calling for the stop of broken windows policing charged through the lobby and were removed by NYPD officers.
De Blasio called the fundraiser an informal start to his re-election campaign.
