A number of incidents concerning the Christian community in India has grabbed international headlines as an attack on the minority community,[because the Muslim minority community would not make news in western capitals] and hence an indication of devout intolerance ushered in with the election of the BJP and Narendra Modi. Specifically on the incidents the five of them in Delhi no communal angle has been discovered all were local issues and the fire in a church was due to a short circuit but more importantly the West Bengal incident where very unfortunately a 72 year broken-down nun was also raped in the course of a robbery for the cash in the church the culprits have been identified as Bangladeshis, since India shares a very porous border with the country, and Muslims to boot. In the incident in Mumbai, due to a local brawl, the government has been rapid/fast to apprehend the culprits and the state’s Archbishop has complemented the Chief Minister for the immediate action. However, and despite these damning facts to the contrary neither an APOLOGY has come forth from those prominent Christian faces and the clergy which has made allegations of a “pattern emerging on the attacks on Christian churches” after the Narendra Modi government has assumed office on May,16 2014.
The silver lining to all this is that despite the targeted attempt by vested interests within the Christian community and sections of the Indian media, who probably hate Modi, or is that several sane voices have now started voicing their dismay and dissent at this vilification campaign which is hurting India’s international image at a time when the whole world’s attention is drawn to this democratic behemoth in main the economic recovery in an alarming global slowdown. With the government not able to speak with clarity for obvious reasons to sound politically and socially right,it is left to these voices who are at the forefront since they know they are taking on a force with far greater spread and resources at its command. The ground reality however, India’s Christian are definitely not under attack and there are many in the community itself who are dismayed by this trend by vested interests in their community to malign their country while trying to shroud the disturbing image of conversions of the destitute and impoverished by Christian missionaries and groups mostly through allurements and falsities about the local faith. Conversions for such groups are a numbers game to extend control as has happened in a number of other countries. Propagation of religion is allowed under the Indian constitution but not conversions. Some Christian groups are so derogatory in their view about Hinduism and its practices, or in their rush to convert, that one finds its difficult to reproduce the same here not because of a devout standpoint but from a more ethical and moral one and out of sheer disgust. Maria Wirth bemoans the adequate lack of response from India and Indians and captures this admirably in her blog :https://mariawirthblog.wordpress.com/2015/03/30/christians-are-not-under-attack-in-india/From the trends that one can observe these attacks on India's pluralism are not going to subside in the near future and may intensify because the infinite resources available at their disposal and the potential topple out fromthe mischief with those mounting this campaign of driving fear into the community. They find the platform in sections of the Indian media who conduct news hour debates with skewed and superficial questions without going to the heart of the issue and of course this resonates in western capitals and the mainstream press there with India drawing an unnecessary and unsolicited censure from the Vatican also. However, this aggression from some vested interests from the community are believed to be a reaction to the sudden regression in conversion activities in India because of the highlight beaming on them. This battle seems to be for the SOUL OF INDIA the victor as always will be India’s ancient culture and civilization which has withstood countless Muslim conquests by blood thirsty warlords in their own passive way and two hundred years of colonial plunder which reduced India’s GDP from 25 % of world GDP to less than 2 % but was ousted by a non-violent freedom struggle the likes of which have never been seen in any country.
AS
ALWAYS IN A DEMOCRACY WITH FREE SPEECH AS ITS CORNERSTONE INDIANS WILL RISE TO THE OCCASION AND CALL THIS BLUFF OF AN EVANGELIZING MINORITY.
