Designer Les
lie Xia aims to paper the streets of major cities with the names of those lost to police violence and other senseless acts of violence: Alton Sterling,Philando Castle, Trayvon Martin, and Sandra Bland, and, tragically, and many more. Each sticker in her collection is designed by an artist of color to remember and honor their lives. The project “started as a response to the recent shootings of Alton Sterling and Philando Castile, and as an extension of the physical manifestation of the #SayTheirNames movement online — a movement to remember and focus on the black bodies that have been lost, Xia says. She hopes the stickers “will serve as a way for people to see the name, or say the name, and remember these individuals not as victims, but as fellow human beings. On the project page, or artist Heather Abbott says of her design for the Trayvon Martin sticker: “At the rate people of color are slain at the hands of police in our country,we often forget one name once the next headline appears. Trayvon Martin was ‘one of the first’ young Black men to be slain in our recent times of social media news coverage, yet I feel he has already been forgotten. Playing on ‘the elephant in the room’ and ‘an elephant never forgets, and ’ I placed Trayvon sitting on top of an elephant carrying his name.”Learn more approximately the artists, their designs, and the spirit that animates the project here.
